Ronald Brooks and his daughter, Star, faced a difficult choice after Lafayette Elementary School was closed along with dozens of other Chicago schools in spring 2013.

Chopin Elementary, the district's designated "welcoming school" for displaced Lafayette pupils, was almost a mile farther from their Humboldt Park home.
