Ofer Malamud is an Associate Professor at the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago. He is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economics Research. Ofer conducts research in the fields of labor economics and the economics of education. His research is focused on the effect of general and specific education on labor market outcomes, educational investments over the life course, and the role of technology in the formation of human capital. In particular, he has examined the relative returns to academic and vocational education in Romania and the trade-off between early specialization and the gains from delaying the choice of a major field of study in Britain. He has also studied the effect of college education on geographical mobility and on health in the United States due to draft-avoidance behavior during the Vietnam War. Most recently, he has been conducting experimental and quasi-experimental studies to explore the effect of home computer use on child and adolescent outcomes in Romania, the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) program in Peru, and the role of parental monitoring in Chile.
